Hey Jeremy!
I have been diagnosed with ADHD, & have taken a variety of meds for it. Of them all, the Strattera works best for me. I have used Ritalin, hated it. It gave me a horrible migraine, Adderal made my hands shake badly, Prozac made me not give a crap & Welbutrin made me mean as a snake! But the Strattera seems just right.
When I first started taking it, I did not know what to expect. I read labels like crazy, so I knew it could make me have suicidal thoughts, but that was it. Well, here is what my first day was like. I felt like I was half asleep, very blase, very meh,. Nothing was funny, nothing made me angry, I was just, there,. I also wanted to sleep a lot. And I had one horrible crying spell when the guys at work were being stupid (I am 46 BTW, a little older than u I suppose, so I have the job as opposed to the schoolin' to worry about,. =-D) & when that was over, I wanted to kill them, not myself, LOL! This lasted about 2 weeks. Then very slowly, I started to find stuff funny, & was not sleepy, & everything seemed normal, almost like it was not working. But it did work! I did not talk constantly, I could stay at my desk & focus on my work, folks made comments about how well I was doing, & I cared about the quality of my work (as opposed to Prozac), LOL!
Another side benefit of Strattera, nothing hurt. I had been thrown off a horse early last year, & broke my collar bone & messed up my sternum. A year later, it all still hurt. Well, when I started taking the Strattera, it quit hurting. OTOH, I bent back a fingernail, & instead of being a giant crybaby, I was like, huh, look at that. So be careful when doing sports or anything where u might get hurt or over extend yourself. You might not know you've injured yourself.
I am surprised u got 40 mg right off the bat. My dr started me at 25 mg in the a.m., then 2 weeks later, it went to 25 mg in the a.m. & another 25 mg at night. That worked well for me, but if it had not the dr would have upped it in 2 week increments. If u r feeling too tired, ask ur dr if u can ease into it.
Also, here is the gross part, keep an eye on the color of ur urine. If it turns a dark orange TELL YOUR DR!!! Strattera can cause liver damage, & u will have to have regular bloodwork. But I think that is only twice a year.
As for the short attention span & the looping songs, no drug will make it all go away. I would let ur teacher know u have a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD so perhaps they will be a little more understanding, or can help in some way.
Good luck! Find jobs that need ur creative side, ur ability to hyperfocus, ur ability to multitask. I find it can be an asset in the right place, =-) Use the Force, LOL!
